Change of Citizenship: Filling up of Renunciation certificate Form

 

  • INTRODUCTION:

The Constitution of India does not permit holding of dual nationality by Indian nationals. As and when an Indian national obtains a foreign nationality, he/she is not entitled to retain dual citizenship and has to renounce their citizenship at the time of acquiring another nationality.

  • Renunciation of Indian Nationality: Renunciation of Indian nationality is irrevocable and due care must be exercised in making an application for renunciation. On acquisition of foreign citizenship all Indian nationals included Minors should renounce the Indian citizenship.
  • Fee: Fee for renunciation of Indian citizenship is €80 + €2 in two separate postal orders/bank drafts.
  • Penalty time: Penalty would be imposed if a person (including a minor) after acquisition of foreign nationality retains the Indian passport beyond three years or travels on it beyond the grace period of three months, on a passport whose final validity expired on or after 01/01/2005.

Fines would be imposed at the following rates:

  • Retention of the Indian passport beyond the grace period - Rs. 10,000/- (equivalent in local currency),
  • For each travel - Rs 10,000 (equivalent in local currency) subject to a maximum of 5 travels,
  • If the Indian passport got re-issued (after obtaining foreign citizenship/passport), an additional fine of Rs 25,000/- (equivalent in local currency) would be charged. 
  • Applications are to be made to the Embassy of India, Dublin renunciation of your Indian citizenship.
  • After you receive your Irish passport, you may apply for a Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Certificate.

  • Submission of Application and Documents to Embassy

Submit the following documents either at Embassy or send by post to Embassy of India, 69 Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin-4, Ireland:

  • The above completed application form;
  • Two separate postal orders/bank drafts as C above
  • Original Indian Passport along with self-attested photocopy of front and last page of the passport;
  • Naturalisation certificate copy issued by INIS, Ireland

NB:Before applying to the Embassy, please check all the above documents and appropriate fee have been attached with the application.

Document submission time: Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 12.00 noon. (Except holidays)*

Processing Time:3 working days from the date of submission in Embassy

3.         Collection Procedure for Renunciation certificate:

Renunciation certificate may be collected from the Embassy, after 3 working days. Please bring your receipt while collection.

To receive the Renunciation certificate by Post, applicants are required to send a self-addressed registered envelope with application (Tamper proof envelope only).
